Bergen Beer Bars

by mike on June 16, 2009

I’m a big fan of beer, not the typical stale, plain, chemically smooth American Lagers, but crafty, artisan, thoughtful brews and below are some places to get a few good pints.

Andy’s Corner Bar (Bogota) is known for its beer selection, Andy’s Bar will never disappoint.  Barbara and George put all their time and effort into keeping the bar going and tending to their loyal fan club.  The after work crowd sits at the wood bar sipping their ales, pilsners and stouts while enjoying some music and the Food Network on the televisions.  The atmosphere changes a little later in the day when George arrives.  You know you’re in for a treat.  His loud voice echoes through the narrow room making everyone smile while he pours an IPA or Hefeweissen.

The pretzel to cleanse the palette is a staple and a tradition.  You want to know an answer to something beer related, ask George, he’ll tell you.  Bringing your own food is totally ok and in fact, encouraged.  Make sure you check out the bottle selection near the rear of the bar and sign up for the 100 beer club.  It’s also the only bar around that has cask conditioned beer. The Copper Mine Pub (North Arlington) is new to the scene, but worth stopping by.  Craft beers and nothing but craft beers!  20 Lines and 60 or so bottles, this newly opened bar is bound to please.  Situated on Ridge Road, there are a few parking spots (behind the building) but ample street parking.  They are open everyday including Sunday.  Vito, a former employee of the Rutherford Wine Shoppe, is a young guy with a passion for beer.  Plenty of televisions and an eclectic mix of music and some video game consoles too.  Bring your own food until their kitchen officially opens. Open Mic nights weekly, live bands, gravity kegs/firkins and beer promos make this bar a rising star. (website)

Park & Orchard (East Rutherford) is known for their awesome food and unbelievable wine menu, but they have a few good beers on draft also.  Usually something from Flying Dog or Sierra Nevada is on draft as well as hard cider from Doc’s.  Pair that up with great food and you have a winner. The Office (Ridgewood) is a chain restaurant that has a decent selection of beer, but nothing really craft.  Most of their taps are full of typical lagers like Stella, Bud & Miller Lite. However, after speaking to the regional manager, Dan, this week, he told me something awesome! They are beginning to get craft brews like Green Flash and Southern Tier, Delirium Tremens and a few Belgiums too. It’s really up to the restaurant manager. I’m stoked! (website)

Mahwah & Allendale Bar & Grill (Mahwah & Allendale) is a grill with a pretty good tap list from what I gather.  I haven’t been there in a while, but they rock some Blue Point and Erie Brewing Company! (website)

Firewaters (Hackensack) wouldn’t suck if the fist pumpers and meat heads wouldn’t fight all the time. They really do have a great selection of beer, but the dance music, bouncers and fights are not my cup of ale. (website)

Ed’s Tavern (Saddle Brook) has cheap beer and a fun crowd.  They may not have a great selection, but it’s OK cause it’s a old time favorite. (website)

Do you know of any others?  What’s your favorite style of beer or brand?  Leave some feedback!
